SKIN CARE INGREDIENTS

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

What is in your routine?

Cleanse

Do you wash your face? I don't mean in the shower with your body wash. Picking out the right cleanser is important. A cleanser with harsh chemicals may dry your already dry skin out even more. It's hard to navigate with so many skincare brands, going by ingredients is the best way to pick out the right product for you.

Ingredients

Salicylic acid and Benzoyl peroxide are great for oily, acne prone, and combination skin. These ingredients will remove debris and excess oil all while killing the bacteria that causes acne. For dry skin you want to look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, and jojoba oil. Sensitive skin needs calming ingredients such as hemp oil and vitamin E. Hemp oil contains anti-inflammatory compounds to help sooth the skin. Vitamin E is actually good for all skin types. For sensitive skin it soothes and provides a protective barrier.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation helps sluff off dead skin cells and unclog pores. Physical and chemical are the two types of exfoliation. Physical exfoliation is normally done once a week and chemical can be done as often as you'd like depending on your skin health. At home physical exfoliation is typically done using a scrub made of a cream base and coarse particles. You have to watch out for these because they can cause micro tears in the skin. At home chemical exfoliation is usually done using a product containing an AHA or BHA. These should only be used on skin that has a healthy barrier. If you don't have a skin care routine you will need to establish that first.

Ingredients Popular ingredients in physical scrubs are salt, sugar, crushed walnuts, ground coffee, jojoba beads, and pumice crystals. Examples of AHAs include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and mandelic acid. The most popular BHA in skin care is salicylic acid. If you have sensitive skin lactic acid is a great start for exfoliation. PHA's are also safe as they have a larger molecule and will not penetrate the skin as deep. Examples of PHA's are gluconolactone, galactose and lactobionic acid.

Moisturize

You need to moisturize! Yes, even if you have oily skin. It is important to keep your skin lubricated and to protect your skins barrier. Moisturizing daily can help prevent extremely dry or excessively oily skin. It also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Ingredients

Oily skin needs moisturized but certain ingredients should be avoided. Coconut oil, mineral oil, and petroleum all clog pores. A light moisturizer with hyaluronic acid is perfect for oily, acne prone skin. Dry skin needs ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, and vitamin E.

Ingredients To Avoid

Always check your labels for the word "fragrance" or "parfum" and any artificial dyes. Fragrance and parfum are typically multiple chemicals that have no function in the product.

Also avoid phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, and parabens.
