5 Ingredients to Avoid While Pregnant

When talking about skincare ingredients related to pregnant women, they should seek permission, from their doctor and skin specialists to get directives for what to use during various stages of pregnancy.

Some ingredients are said to be more detrimental to women who are expecting to improve their health and to their skin in general. 5 key ingredients that pregnant women should avoid using are:

1. Chemical Sunscreens

No artificial sunscreens are recommended as they could possibly impact the baby’s nervous system. Often pregnant women are advised to protect themselves from the sun by using natural sun protection methods such as a physical sunscreen or hats/other body coverings. Physical sunscreens typically include ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

2. Essential Oils

Often considered as an alternative product in the beauty category and come in handy for women for various purposes. However, these come quite concentrated and thus before using any such ingredient, pregnant women should specifically consult their doctor.

3. Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acids

Often during pregnancies, women are prone to breakouts and acne. However, during this phase, products containing Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acids should be avoided. Often the blend of these acids is present in creams that are used for anti-acne purposes. Pregnant women should opt for products that have gentle exfoliation ingredients such as lactic acid.

4. Retinol and Vitamin A products

Such ingredients cause obstacles in the development stages of babies. Therefore, doctors often suggest pregnant women avoid products containing such ingredients for their skin.

5. Aluminum Chloride

Often found in the fragrance category, deodorants and scents have this ingredient. It is one of the most controversial ingredients debated by various brands and should only be used in lower concentrations if one’s doctor allows it.

One thing to take into consideration is that during pregnancy, one’s skincare needs are dependent upon the hormonal changes, therefore it is always helpful to understand it clearly before selecting any sort of product. In order to make a wise choice, it is always better to have a look at the ingredients in a beauty product.
